Parents, students, staff and community members -
My name is Rich Schneider and I am very excited and honored for the opportunity to serve as your new superintendent. This is my first year as a superintendent meaning that I have much to learn. Not just about the role as the CEO of the district, but more importantly about the parents, students, staff members, and the community as a whole. In my short time here, I have been very impressed by the friendly greetings and the pride in the communities of the Yellow Medicine East Schools. I strongly believe that when we work together, we can accomplish a great deal.
It is vital that you understand how I develop my perspectives as an educator. First of all, my wife, Sheri and I have been married for 31 years and have 3 adult children. Phillip is an orthopedic surgery resident in the US Army in El Paso, Texas. He and his wife, Calynn, have 2 beautiful girls (Joelle, 3 and Judith, 2). We are very proud (and a little doting) grandparents. Danielle Thornburg and her husband, Scott, live in Phoenix, Arizona. Dani is a plastic surgery resident with the Mayo Health System. My youngest daughter, Melanie is a senior at the University of South Dakota majoring in social work. My wife, Sheri will be a reading interventionist at West Side Elementary School in Marshall.
I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology Education from the University of South Dakota (USD), Masters Degree in Educational Administration from South Dakota State University, Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from USD, and Superintendent Endorsement from St Mary’s University. I have been in education for 29 years with 17 of those years as a high school and middle school principal. In addition to my experience as a husband, parent, teacher, coach, and principal, I served in the South Dakota National Guard retiring 6 years ago after 28 years. I grew up on a farm near Spencer, South Dakota. I am one of 8 children.
All of these experiences have helped mold my perspective on education. But, there are 2 things that I consider most important. First and foremost, is building relationships in order to gain perspective. Secondly, is releasing the passion in all of us. Combining these 2 things (relationships and passion) into our stakeholder roles can greatly enhance and improve our experiences.
YME’s mission statement is “providing a caring environment of high expectations that prepares every student for a successful future and instills the value of learning.” I am confident that we have dedicated staff that are poised to serve our students in releasing their passions by challenging each and every student to strive for their full potential. Education is a powerful tool to help us reach our full capability. We hope the students will take full advantage of the variety of opportunities for all students in both academics and activities.
